A decade ago, businesses measured their success in terms of profit. While this is still an important measure today, the impact of social media has provided another important metric of success. The most successful organizations from a social media standpoint may not be the same as those with the highest profitability. However, there are many profitable companies represented among the most followed and liked organizations. The important challenge for companies trying to gain altitude on social media ranking charts is finding a way to convert popularity to profit.

Facebook, the inspiration for much of the social networking craze, has easily taken top ranking in popularity. However, the company isn’t as well-known for its ability to monetize its platform. McDonald’s, Walmart, Starbucks, Coca-Cola and Google are among the top 20 social businesses, and each of these is known for having success in making a profit. There are some surprising success stories in social ranking giants as well. You might be surprised, for example, to find Subway in the top 20 for its social standing.
