Have you ever been engrossed in something and realized it was quiet. Where did everyone go? You set off in search of your companions only to find they are off onto the next adventure without you.
Today, that next adventure is social media. What happened? You were sure it was just a fad; or Linked-What? 70 Million users and you missed it?
Don’t fret yet! You’re not as behind the curve as you might think. With 500 million users on facebook, 70 million on LinkedIn and how ever many they are up to now on Twitter, there are many more millions of people that are NOT on social media yet. You’re not as far behind the curve as you thought. Heck, I’d say the curve hasn’t quite hit yet.
So, what do you do? Let ‘s get going!
- Decide what you want to accomplish through your involvement in social media.
- Decide where your target audience is.
- How do you want to be perceived – think about who you really are. Authenticity is critical so this is an important step!
- Start a profile on the first social media site you select. Not sure where to start? If you are a business professional, start on LinkedIn! Rock the World will help you get started! You’ll find a helpful blog, great resources like a worksheet, and this really rockin’ book!
- Once you feel your profile is complete and accurate, ask friends to look it over, then invite those friends to join your network.
- Build from there. Invite people, accept invitations, reach out and communicate as if the people you are talking to are right in front of you.
- When you feel comfortable, add the next platform. Consider Twitter for example. Learn what you can, decide who you want to be and see step 3… repeat!
So there you are. Seven easy (sort of) steps to get started in social media.
